Discovering Family Fun in Rome: Top Activities for The Whole Crew!

Welcome to the Eternal City, Rome, the perfect starting point for an unforgettable summer adventure in Italy! Join us as we embark on a family road trip through the stunning city of Rome with our 5-year-old daughter, our beloved 15-year-old Yorki, and the invaluable support of my parents.

Exploring Rome Together

While my husband and I have traversed the cobblestone streets of Rome on several occasions, this trip was special as we experienced the city's wonders with our entire family. The vibrant culture, rich history, and awe-inspiring architecture of Rome offered a plethora of family-friendly activities that catered to individuals of all ages.

1. Visit the Colosseum

The iconic Colosseum stands as a testament to Rome's glorious past. While our furry companion, Harley, had to stay back at our Airbnb, we were captivated by the tales of gladiators and ancient Rome. The panoramic views from the upper levels left us in awe, while our daughter was fascinated by the historical narratives.

2. Explore Villa Borghese

A visit to the beautiful Villa Borghese is a must for families. The expansive park boasts playgrounds, a serene lake for rowing, and ample open spaces ideal for a family picnic. Don't miss out on the Bioparco di Roma, a charming zoo nestled within the park, guaranteed to enchant the little ones.

3. Discover the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill

Step back in time as you wander through the ruins of the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill. Immerse yourself in the ancient heart of Rome, where public life thrived amidst grand temples and monuments. Opt for a guided tour and remember to wear comfortable shoes to truly appreciate the historical significance of this site.

4. Throw a Coin in the Trevi Fountain

My personal favorite spot in Rome, the Trevi Fountain beckons visitors to toss a coin and make a wish. Legend has it that a coin thrown into the fountain ensures a return to this enchanting city.

5. Pantheon

The Pantheon is one of Rome’s best-preserved ancient buildings and happens to be my husbands favorite ancient structure. Its massive dome and oculus are absolutely awe-inspiring and is a must visit when in Rome!

6. Enjoy Gelato at Piazza Navona

Treat yourselves to some of the best gelato in Rome while enjoying the lively atmosphere of Piazza Navona. Street performers and beautiful fountains make this a fun stop for the whole family.

7. Vatican Museums, Sistine Chapel + Saint Peter's Basilica

Visiting Vatican City with our entire family was an unforgettable experience, filled with awe-inspiring art, history, and spirituality. I wasn't sure at first if my 5 year old daughter could endure the four hour tour of the museums, the Sistine Chapel and Saint Peter's but she did surprisingly well! We sat silently in the Sistine Chapel for 10 minutes and she was in awe of the masterpieces on the ceiling. Make sure to book your tickets in advance and as always, wear comfortable shoes.
